Track the fish: A human rights impact assessment of the small pelagic fish value chain in Senegal and Mauritania
"This assessment bridges the gap between human rights principles and practical action, illuminating pathways for responsible business practices in complex regional value chains."
About the report
This pioneering study, commissioned by the Global Roundtable on Marine Ingredients, examines the human rights implications across the small pelagic fish value chain in Mauritania and Senegal. Using a rigorous human rights lens, our assessment identifies both positive and adverse impacts on all stakeholders whilst distinguishing between rights-holders (such as workers and community members) and duty-bearers (including governments and businesses).
As the first assessment to link impacts in this regional value chain with the business and human rights framework, this report provides critical insights for organisations operating in or sourcing from these markets. Through extensive stakeholder consultation, we identify salient issues, root causes, and actionable recommendations that can catalyse meaningful change throughout the supply chain.
The findings offer valuable guidance for businesses conducting due diligence in accordance with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, particularly for those participating in the Mauritanian Fishery Improvement Project for small pelagics. By highlighting opportunities for more proactive engagement between progressive actors and rights-holders, this assessment supports responsible business practices that balance international standards with local realities.
